Pastor Daniel Whipple, from Rose City Church, in his sermon, “Contentment in a Broken System,” takes a fresh look at Paul’s admonitions to Timothy from 1 Timothy 6. He cautions us that some of Paul’s advices applies to specific problem being experienced by the church in Ephesus in the First Century, and that Paul is not laying down rules for all Christians ar every time and place. The Ephesus church had been corrupted by its leaders love of money, resulting in a lack of contentment. Rich members could dictate who and what would be preached, including some wealthy women. Paul emphasized that Christians should not seek to lord it over others or think they could buy their way to heaven. The contentment of the Christian life comes from treating others with gentleness respect and love, which is valid advice for all of us in this time and place.
