Pastor Gail Whitcome Linstrom – “Wealth and Wisdom” – Verdugo Community Church November 10, 2024

In her sermon, “Wisdom and Wealth,” Pastor Gail addressed the question of how we as Christians should acquire and use wealth. In chapter 5 of Jame’s letter he condemned those who abused others to get wealthy. Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels challenged the rich young ruler to not let his wealth rule his heart and get in the way of salvation. Jesus warned against putting your faith in earthly wealth but instead instructed us to store up treasures in heaven through helping those in need. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, who eventually earned a large income as an academic writer, and speaker, confronted the challenge of not letting this divert him from his helping others. His practical advice to believers is to first ensure that they have met their obligations to family, employees, and creditors, then to spend the surplus on helping others is advice we should take to heart.
