VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE SEPTEMBER 22, 2024

We begin our service with song. Pastor Gail welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading from Psalm 18. Albert Ramseyer opens us in prayer. Nick Baltazar leads us in our praise singing. Chaplain David Saltzman takes up the praises and concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People.

 

In her sermon, “The Duality of Keeping Sabbath and Practicing Discipleship,” Pastor Gail helps us to see the relationship between Isaiah 58 and Matthew 25 and the ways in which these two important passages of Scripture are the basis for keeping the two great commandments of loving God and loving our neighbor as ourselves. By honoring Sabbath worship and rest, we are prepared and empowered to live out our discipleship of caring for others with kindness and compassion. As Isaiah 58 admonishes us, however, our behavior toward others must match our words to demonstrate our love for the Lord. In the coming weeks we will use Scripture, John Wesley’s life and ministries, as well as our denomination’s Free Methodist Way materials to discern God’s plan for Verdugo’s second century and to reshape her outreach ministry to share the Lord’s love in practical ways to serve the community.
