VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE SEPTEMBER 29, 2024
Monday Sep 30, 2024
Monday Sep 30, 2024
We begin our service with song. Pastor Gail welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading from Psalm 33. Chaplain David Saltzman opens us in prayer. Nick Baltazar and Ed Manacop lead us in our praise singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People. Hugh Linstrom gives us background on James, who was the half brother of Jesus and a leader in the early Jerusalem church before being martyred in 62 A.D. as we begin our sermon series from the book of James.
Pastor Gail in her sermon, “The Study of James: Finding a Faith that Works,” invites us individually and as a church to eek to know and follow God’s direction for the future. James and others such as John Wesley provide us with practical advice on how to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only. James reminds us that when our faith is tested it is to make it stronger. We should ask God for wisdom and help in overcoming our challenges, but do so with a firm belief that God will provide, for divided loyalty between God and the world makes us unstable and prevents us from receiving this help. God does not tempt us, temptation comes from within. Whether rich or poor, we need to follow God and not the transitory things of this world. God has given us a new birth, and we should look at the world with a new perspective and rely on his promises. As we do that we will enjoy his blessings and be better able to minister to others.
