In her sermon, “Trust Is Key to Discipleship,” Pastor Gail looks at two stories, the first in 1 Kings 17 where Elijah was instructed to confront King Ahab and then flee into the desert at God’s instructions, later going to live at a widow’s house in Sidon, outside of Israel. He asked the widow to trust that God would provide the flour and oil needed to make meals, which occurred. Then the widow’s only son and future support dies. Elijah prays for his return and the boy lives again, causing the widow, a gentile, to praise God. In Luke 7 a widow’s son has died and is being taken out to be buried. Jesus has compassion over her loss and raises the son back to life and returns him to his mother. These stories demonstrate that God cares for each individual. We need to trust that God will help us overcome our challenges.

In her sermon, “A Disciple’s Life Is the Testimony of Their Faith,” Pastor Gail looks at the teaching of James, the probable half brother of Jesus and the leader of the early Jerusalem church, to see how we show that we are Christians. James makes the point that just saying we believe, or even quoting Scripture, is not what Jesus expects from his followers. It is our actions toward those those we live with and encounter, especially those who are oppressed and rejected by society ,that demonstrate our faith. Only then can we claim that we are Christians, empowered to follow God’s direction in our lives and show his love to others.

In her sermon, “Following Jesus to the Mountaintop,” Pastor Gail uses the story of the Transfiguration in Mark 9 where Jesus takes Peter, John, and James to a mountaintop. There they see Jesus conversing with Moses and Elijah, who both had encounters with God on Mt. Sinai. The disciples are overwhelmed and uncertain what to make of this revelation, but Jesus reassures them not to fear. But as happened with Moses and Elijah, this mountaintop experience is followed by the hard work of doing what God wants us to do. In Jesus’s life this meant the crucifixion. Yet because of the Resurrection, we too can be transformed and empowered to follow God’s direction in our lives and show his love to others.

In her sermon, “Journeying with Jesus Always,” Pastor Gail continues our Lenten study of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. She reminds us that the call to take up our cross and follow Jesus found in Mark 8, and Mathew 16 and Luke 9, was addressed to Jesus’ disciples as a metaphor for total commitment, not martyrdom. We are each to take up our own crosses in following Jesus, not Jesus’s cross. The challenges and disappointments we face in our own lives are where we need to focus on Jesus’ constant admonition to “fear not” and his promises that we will have a more abundant life and the help of the Holy Spirit. She reminds us again that Jesus wants us to care for others, particularly those viewed as society’s outcasts. She challenges us to “fear not” as we make a total commitment to following Jesus.

In her sermon, “Practicing Discipleship on the Way,” Pastor Gail addresses what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. She traces from Isaiah 58 the requirement that God wants his followers to recognize and help the poor, the homeless, the sick, those imprisoned and those oppressed. She then points out that Jesus modeled that behavior when he reached out to heal Bartimaeus, an ostracized blind beggar, in Mark 10. Jesus reminded his followers in Matthew 25 that when we help these people, we are helping Jesus himself. She challenges us to be aware of those in need around us and see them as valuable children of God.
