In her sermon, “Unexpected Lessons on Love,” Pastor Liz Cornell of Cucamonga Christian Fellowship, looks at the interaction between Jesus and the disciples in Mark 10 when, after Jesus had explained his coming passion and resurrection, they wanted him to agree to give them political power in the coming Kingdom of God. When Jesus asked if they were willing to pay the price he was going to pay, they said they would. Jesus responded that while they might indeed suffer the same fate, he had not come to create an earthly kingdom. Instead of the greed, abuses, and tyranny of earthly rulers, anyone wanting to be great in the Kingdom had to become the servant of all. God is love, and ambition is not compatible with love. Love is about faithfulness, and following Jesus even when things don’t seem to make sense. God’s love is sacrificial, humble, and abundant.

Andrew Mumm – “Closing the Gap” – Verdugo Community Church October 13, 2024
Thursday Oct 17, 2024
Thursday Oct 17, 2024
n his sermon, “Closing the Gap,” Andrew Mumm continues our study of the book of James by reminding us that to love your neighbor as ourselves we must put aside the differences we see in society. Merely saying pious words and having righteous thoughts are not enough. We must act to meet the needs of others. As we work on being doers of the Word and not just hearers, we will become more aware of God’s direction on what we need to do. Instead of just lifting up our prayers for others, we can become part of the answers to those prayers. If we do not take action, then our faith will die. Our task is to close the gap between what we believe and what we do.

In her sermon, “From Hearers to Does Using Scripture,” Pastor Somer Reed, from Marina Christian Church continues our study of the book of James by challenging us to put our faith to work, to be doers of the Word, and not just hearers. She looks to the examples given by James and incidents in her own life to illustrate what it means to truly live out Jesus’scommandment to love others as you love yourself. The temptations and controversies we see in our lives were present in the First Century church that James was writing to. Then as now, true religion is found not in passive acceptance of the Word, but in addressing the real needs of those around us who have been ignored.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “The Study of James: Finding a Faith that Works,” invites us individually and as a church to eek to know and follow God’s direction for the future. James and others such as John Wesley provide us with practical advice on how to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only. James reminds us that when our faith is tested it is to make it stronger. We should ask God for wisdom and help in overcoming our challenges, but do so with a firm belief that God will provide, for divided loyalty between God and the world makes us unstable and prevents us from receiving this help. God does not tempt us, temptation comes from within. Whether rich or poor, we need to follow God and not the transitory things of this world. God has given us a new birth, and we should look at the world with a new perspective and rely on his promises. As we do that we will enjoy his blessings and be better able to minister to others.

Sunday Sep 22, 2024
In her sermon, “The Duality of Keeping Sabbath and Practicing Discipleship,” Pastor Gail helps us to see the relationship between Isaiah 58 and Matthew 25 and the ways in which these two important passages of Scripture are the basis for keeping the two great commandments of loving God and loving our neighbor as ourselves. By honoring Sabbath worship and rest, we are prepared and empowered to live out our discipleship of caring for others with kindness and compassion. As Isaiah 58 admonishes us, however, our behavior toward others must match our words to demonstrate our love for the Lord. In the coming weeks we will use Scripture, John Wesley’s life and ministries, as well as our denomination’s Free Methodist Way materials to discern God’s plan for Verdugo’s second century and to reshape her outreach ministry to share the Lord’s love in practical ways to serve the community.
