VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE NOVEMBER 20, 2022
Monday Nov 21, 2022
Monday Nov 21, 2022
We begin our service in song. Pastor Gail Linstrom welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading from Psalm 46, and Luisa Fernandez opens us with prayer. Nick Baltazar, Jessica Jimenez, and Mike Minasyan lead us in praise and worship music. Albert Ramseyer takes up the concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People.
In his sermon, “Christ Jesus, King of All: From Divinity through Humanity to Victorious Divine Savior and King Eternal,” Pastor Lavon Gentry, from Cucamonga Christian Fellowship, looks at the reasons why Jesus followed the path he did, and why that makes him our Savior and King. Christ was with God at Creation, but human sin intervened and left human kind in darkness. Christ voluntarily gave up divinity to be the bridge between humanity and God, was subjected to the same temptations and sorrows we experience, and was obedient to death, even death on a cross, so that humanity might be saved. By these actions he reconciled all things to himself. Reason alone will not get us to where we can understand this mystery: we need to accept in on faith.
Pastor Gail then leads us in Communion, so you are invited to have bread or crackers and a beverage ready to participate in this sacrament.
Verdugo is again meeting in person but makes its Sunday sermons available to you on Facebook and posts audio copies of the service and sermon at https://verdugochurch.podbean.com.

Pastor Gail in her sermon “God’s Presence Brings Peace and Joy” looks at the reality of the loss and grief we all experience, losses that are highlighted by the coming holidays. She calls us to remember the promises of God that he will be with us and his plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future. Jesus entered the world as one of us, experiencing our joys and pain and sorrows. Yet his life, death, and resurrection confirmed these promises of God. We need to seek the presence of God through the Holy Spirit in our lives, and have faith that God will be there with us in the dark days and nights.

Pastor Moises Bejarano of Sunrise Church in Rialto looks to John 4 for his sermon. He notes that Jesus did not use the usual route from Judea to Galilee, but instead knew he had to go through Samaria to meet the woman at the well and bring salvation to her and her village, just as he had to go to the Cross to provide salvation for all. When after that Jesus meets a government official whose son is dying, Jesus looks beyond the crowd’s desire for spectacular signs to the man’s simple faith and heals his son with a word. The Samaritan woman, her fellow villagers, and the government official were marginalized and rejected by the society Jesus lived in. Nevertheless he showed them mercy and rewarded their faith. God calls us to take roads we would not choose, to meet people and situations we would avoid, to do his will here on earth. We, too, should look beyond our social divisions and extend God’s grace and mercy to all.

Pastor Daniel Whipple, from Rose City Church, in his sermon, “Nonjudgmental Humbleness,” considers Jesus’s parable found in Luke 18:9 – 14 of the self-righteous Pharisee praising God for his righteous lifestyle, and the reviled tax collector begging God for mercy to forgive his sins. Then, as now, there was divisions in society that left each group feeling it was righteous compared to others. This leads to our not seeing other people as whole persons, and we are proud not to be like them. Jesus calls us to not judge those we disagree with, but to humbly see and love them as Jesus sees and loves them. He died for each of us and extends his grace and mercy to all.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Making a Difference for Good – And God,” considers Jesus’s parable of the unjust judge who is compelled to give justice to the persistent widow in Luke 18, affirming that God hears our prayers for justice, however much resistance we seem to experience. In 2 Timothy 3 and 4 Paul affirms the need for Timothy to clearly teach the Scriptures and continue to lead his church faithfully, preparing and equipping them to spread the Good News and do every good work. Likewise, we at Verdugo Church must work together to seek justice and the welfare of the poor and marginalized in our neighborhood, our city and beyond.

Pastor Gail considers the story of Jesus healing ten lepers in her sermon “ … And Then There Was One” from Luke 17:11 – 19. Jesus told the group to go to the priest to verify they were cured. As they went, they were cured. Only one leper, a Samaritan. came back praising God and kneeling to thank Jesus for his healing. Jesus told him that his faith had cured him and made him whole. Are we ready to respond to God’s passionate love for us by leaving the crowd to tell others about what he has done for us, and become not just cured but made whole?
