VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE OCTOBER 9, 2022
Monday Oct 10, 2022
Monday Oct 10, 2022
We begin our service in song. Pastor Gail Whitcome Linstrom welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading from Psalm 66, and Mike Minasyan opens us with prayer. Nick Baltazar and Mike Minasyan lead us in praise and worship music. Albert Ramseyer takes up the concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Gail considers the story of Jesus healing ten lepers in her sermon “ … And Then There Was One” from Luke 17:11 – 19. Jesus told the group to go to the priest to verify they were cured. As they went, they were cured. Only one leper, a Samaritan. came back praising God and kneeling to thank Jesus for his healing. Jesus told him that his faith had cured him and made him whole. Are we ready to respond to God’s passionate love for us by leaving the crowd to tell others about what he has done for us, and become not just cured but made whole?
Pastor Gail then leads us in Communion, so you are invited to have bread or crackers and a beverage ready to participate in this sacrament.

Pastor Daniel Whipple, from Rose City Church, in his sermon, “Contentment in a Broken System,” takes a fresh look at Paul’s admonitions to Timothy from 1 Timothy 6. He cautions us that some of Paul’s advices applies to specific problem being experienced by the church in Ephesus in the First Century, and that Paul is not laying down rules for all Christians ar every time and place. The Ephesus church had been corrupted by its leaders love of money, resulting in a lack of contentment. Rich members could dictate who and what would be preached, including some wealthy women. Paul emphasized that Christians should not seek to lord it over others or think they could buy their way to heaven. The contentment of the Christian life comes from treating others with gentleness respect and love, which is valid advice for all of us in this time and place.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Parables of the Lost …. and Found,” looks at two parables by Jesus from Luke 15:1 – 10, those of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin. In each story what is lost is found and returned, to great joy in Heaven. Even when we wander away, God continues to seek after us and reconcile us to himself. As disciples, we too should care for the marginalized and hurting.

Pastor Gail, in her sermon, “The Cost of Discipleship,” looks at two occasions where Jesus addressed that issue: Matthew 7:13 – 29 and Luke 14:25 – 35. She reminds us that it takes more than a passive belief in Jesus to become a disciple. It requires active participation in living the way he taught and demonstrated. It requires us to put him first in our lives, ahead of our other relationships and goals.

In his sermon, “Humility and Success,” Pastor Lavon Gentry from Cucamonga Christian Fellowship looks at Luke 14:1, 7 – 14 where Jesus used a dinner held in his honor to remind that God will reward those who show true humility and look after the needs of needs of others. Those who only seek their own success are in the end not going to see these real rewards; they will not inherit the earth. He cautions that we should not confuse feelings of a lack of self worth with being humble. Instead we should follow the example of Jesus, who chose to become human, die, and be resurrected so that we can be rescued from sin. He challenges us to look to Jesus’s example of how to live our lives, not our secular world’s fixation on “success” at any cost.

He reminds us that helping others in need and setting aside time to pray and worship is the answer given by Isaiah. He challenges us to look to Jesus’s example of how to live our lives.
