VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE FEBRUARY 5, 2023
Monday Feb 06, 2023
Monday Feb 06, 2023
We open our service with a gospel song. Pastor Gail Linstrom welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading of Psalm 112, and Jessica Jimenez opens us in prayer. Kim Cox, Jessica Jimenez, Mike Minasyan and Ed Manacop lead us in our praise singing. Albert Ramseyer takes up the concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People. In her sermon “Being Individuals and a Community of Faith,” Pastor Gail has us consider the link between keeping Sabbath and service. God’s consistently reiterates the need to keep the Sabbath throughout Scripture, not to look pious and righteous but to hear God’s voice reveal his heart to us – that we act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with him. This link between Isaiah 58 and Matthew 25 calls us to help bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth by caring for the hungry, homeless, vulnerable, and oppressed among us.
Pastor Gail then leads us in Communion, so you are invited to have bread or crackers and a beverage ready to participate in this sacrament.

In her sermon “Called as Disciples to Be a Light,” Pastor Gail looks at Matthew 4 to show how Jesus called his disciples to follow him in preaching the Good News of the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven, while also helping those in need. She points to current examples of how God has called his people to spread the Good News and change peoples’ lives and communities for the better to challenge us to find ways to do the same in our Verdugo neighborhood and wherever we find ourselves.

In her sermon “Light Amidst the Darkness,” Pastor Gail concludes the Christmas narrative of Mary and Joseph after the visit of the Wise Men, when God directs them to flee to Egypt to protect Jesus’s life, and later to return to Nazareth when the threat is gone. From their story and those of other Biblical people and her own, she shows that God as a plan for each person’s life – and that he will care for them through trials and challenges if they trust him on their journey with him. By following God’s guidance and not culturally-driven expectations and our own desires, we receive unexpected blessings and further God’s plan of salvation.

In her sermon “The Gift of Light,” Pastor Gail alerts us that God works in unexpected ways and in his own timing. She shows how the prophecies in Isaiah 60:1 – 6 which foretell the restoration of Israel’s people to Jerusalem and the birth of Jesus are linked to Matthew 2:1 – 12 when the Wise Men worship Jesus as the newborn king. This is Epiphany: God’s light shines to bring hope and salvation through Jesus Christ, the Lord.

In her sermon, “Celebrating His Presence,” Pastor Gail looks to Isaiah 40:1 – 11 to remind us that God is a caring and loving God who treated his people, exiled because of their sin, as already being forgiven, and comforted them in the midst of their pain and loss. This is the same God who has shown us grace and mercy during the last three years of chaos and loss, and other traumatic times in our lives. We need to love and treat others the same way just as the Lord has loved us. The Lord wants us to live in the present and do what we can now for others, rather than focusing on a distant reward in heaven.
