Pastor Gail Linstrom welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family on this Third Sunday in Advent. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading from Isaiah 35, and we light the third Advent Candle signifying Joy and sing a carol. Luis Fernandez opens us with prayer. Nick Baltazar, Jessica Jimenez, Derrick Adams and Mike Minasyan lead us in praise and worship music. Greg Hart takes up the concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People.
In her sermon, “Why I Celebrate Christmas,” Pastor Adjua Adams from Light and Life West in Long Beach, reminds us that the manner and importance of Jesus’ birth was prophesied centuries earlier in Isaiah, and its fulfillment set out in Matthew 1. This fulfillment at Bethlehem brings all people hope and salvation.
Pastor Gail then leads us in Communion, so you are invited to have bread or crackers and a beverage ready to participate in this sacrament.

In her sermon, “The Kingdom of Heaven Has Come to Us,” Pastor Gail explores the ways the Bible describes what the coming of the Christ means, and in particular the role that John the Baptist played in preparing the way for Jesus. John challenged people to truly repent and seek God, while also announcing that a greater one was coming who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. Jesus was that one, and he gives us life and hope to live in the Kingdom of God both here and in eternity. With the coming of Jesus the Kingdom of God has truly come to us.

In his sermon, “Christ Jesus, King of All: From Divinity through Humanity to Victorious Divine Savior and King Eternal,” Pastor Lavon Gentry, from Cucamonga Christian Fellowship, looks at the reasons why Jesus followed the path he did, and why that makes him our Savior and King. Christ was with God at Creation, but human sin intervened and left human kind in darkness. Christ voluntarily gave up divinity to be the bridge between humanity and God, was subjected to the same temptations and sorrows we experience, and was obedient to death, even death on a cross, so that humanity might be saved. By these actions he reconciled all things to himself. Reason alone will not get us to where we can understand this mystery: we need to accept in on faith.

Pastor Gail in her sermon “God’s Presence Brings Peace and Joy” looks at the reality of the loss and grief we all experience, losses that are highlighted by the coming holidays. She calls us to remember the promises of God that he will be with us and his plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future. Jesus entered the world as one of us, experiencing our joys and pain and sorrows. Yet his life, death, and resurrection confirmed these promises of God. We need to seek the presence of God through the Holy Spirit in our lives, and have faith that God will be there with us in the dark days and nights.

Pastor Moises Bejarano of Sunrise Church in Rialto looks to John 4 for his sermon. He notes that Jesus did not use the usual route from Judea to Galilee, but instead knew he had to go through Samaria to meet the woman at the well and bring salvation to her and her village, just as he had to go to the Cross to provide salvation for all. When after that Jesus meets a government official whose son is dying, Jesus looks beyond the crowd’s desire for spectacular signs to the man’s simple faith and heals his son with a word. The Samaritan woman, her fellow villagers, and the government official were marginalized and rejected by the society Jesus lived in. Nevertheless he showed them mercy and rewarded their faith. God calls us to take roads we would not choose, to meet people and situations we would avoid, to do his will here on earth. We, too, should look beyond our social divisions and extend God’s grace and mercy to all.
