VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE MAY 15, 2022
Thursday May 19, 2022
Thursday May 19, 2022
We begin our service in song. Pastor Gail Whitcome Linstrom welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family and opens us in prayer. Dale Reynolds calls us to worship with a reading of Psalms 148. Guest music director Nicolas Baltazar accompanied by Mike Minasyan lead us in praise and worship music. Albert Ramseyer gives us his reflections on the just completed 2022 Annual Conference of the Free Methodist Church in Southern California. He then takes up the concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Samantha Davidson in her sermon gives us a fresh perspective on the episode in Acts 11 when the Holy Spirit fell upon gentile believers while Peter is baptizing them. Peter then stays with them and shares their meals. This surprises and concerns some of the other believers. Peter sees that the Spirit has broken down these ethnic barriers and all are welcomed as believers. She challenges us to ask the Holy Spirit to rest upon us and surprise us with what it will be doing in our everyday lives, using the prayer, “Come, Holy Spirit.” Pastor Dan Davidson then leads us in Communion, so you are invited to have bread or crackers and a beverage ready to participate in this sacrament.
Verdugo is again meeting in person and will make its Sunday sermons available to you on Facebook and will post audio copies of the service and sermon at https://verdugochurch.podbean.com.

Pastor Daniel Whipple, of Rose City Church, considers Jesus’ claim that he and the Father are one, from John 10:22 – 30, in his sermon, “The Certainty of Christ.” He reminds us that we need to decide to accept this claim or reject Jesus as a madman. Jesus being God is good news, since his actions shows who God is – healing, accepting, full of grace, forgiving, loving, and even willing to die for us. A God that knows what it is like to be human.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “The Tree of Life,” reminds us that God always brings life to our world. The eternal life found in the Tree of Life in Genesis 2 and 3 was lost to us through our sin. God continued to reach out to humanity and as described in John 1 finally directly intervened in the world through Jesus. The familiar passages in John 19 and 20 show that through the death and resurrection of Jesus we are restored to the promise of the Tree of Life, a hope made clear in Revelation 21 and 22.

Christina Andriese, in her sermon “Jesus, Our Messiah,” begins with examples of how Empowering Lives International is changing the lives of people in East Africa by giving them both skills to earn their way out of poverty and a purpose in life from their relationship with Jesus. She invites us to look at Luke 19:28 – 38 and Zechariah 9:9 to realize that Jesus is our Messiah, too. That recognition allows us to receive who he is and what he wants to be for us.

Pastor Gail in her sermon “Run to the Father’s Arms” takes a new look at the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15, focusing on the father who had the two sons, clearly a metaphor for God. The father did not prevent the youngest son from making mistakes but welcomed him back unconditionally. At the same time she challenged us to realize that the stay at home, obedient son had also broken his relationship with their father. We all need to follow the example of the younger son and repent and return to the Father’s arms.
