In his sermon, “The Seven Thousand,” Pastor Brian Scott of Foothill Church uses the story of Elijah’s interaction with God in 1 Kings 19 to illustrate that God wants to partner with us as he works out his will on this earth.  Elijah goes from the euphoria of calling down fire from heaven on Mt. Carmel to despair that Israel still worshipped the Baals.  He  runs away from his responsibilities and wishes for death. Instead, God sends an angel to support him in his travels and after showing him that the fireworks of wind, fire and, earthquake are not God, in a still small voice asks Elijah why he was there.  Elijah’s complains that he alone was left worshipping God are met with instructions on what to do next, including naming his successor, Elisha, and, the affirmation that there are seven thousand in Israel who still worship God.  God continues to call us to him and to be in relationship, working together to advance the Kingdom of God where we find ourselves.

In his sermon, “God’s Endurance,” Chaplain Daniel Whipple of Rose City Church looks to Isaiah 65:1 –9 to remind us that despite our failings and those of our society, God continues to call us to him and promise that he will be there for those who answer his call. Like the hunters of old who patiently ran down their dinner, we need to remember the long view of God and continue to do what we can to resist evil and advance the Kingdom of God where we find ourselves

n her sermon, “Embracing the Power of the Spirit,” Pastor Gail celebrates Pentecost Sunday and applies it to our experience today individually and as a church. God’s spirit has been at work since Creation, and she notes examples throughout the Old Testament. In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit falls upon all the believers as they are worshipping together. Jesus has told them that this would happen, and thus empowered they would tell the Good News about him “to the uttermost ends of the earth.” We as the church are the hands and feet of Jesus in our time and place, and are called out in faith with the Spirit to fulfill God’s plan for our church.

n her sermon, “Living Out Our Part in God’s Story in Obedience,” Pastor Gail remind’s us that our part in God’s story is something we have to experience and work out in faith. Sometimes God asks us to wait and prepare, as well as act. In Acts 1 the Disciples were asked to wait in Jerusalem after the resurrection so that they would be together when they received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. They used that time to be in prayer and fellowship, so that they were ready to act after that outpouring of the Spirit. We need to be willing to wait for God’s direction, and to use that as a time to build our relationship to God and to others.

In his sermon, “One God, Three in One,” Chaplain David Saltzman uses the words of Jesus in John 14 to help explain the relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as the Trinity. He makes the point that unlike human relationships, there is no hierarchy. The Trinity is not a chain of command but a circle of love working in distinct roles unified by the same mission. Each aspect of God works to provide us with the love and support we need to help bring about the Kingdom of God.

In his sermon, “Love and Truth,” Chaplain Daniel Whipple looks at the promise in John 14 that the Holy Spirit would bring Jesus’s words and deeds to mind in his followers. He points out that this has been an ongoing gift. Although the Gospels were written down years later, then copied and translated over the centuries, they retain their truth and power. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us discern what we see or hear is true and whether is leads us to Jesus. One way to decide if a statement about Jesus is true is to remember that Jesus refused every offer of political or military power, and always called for loving and helping others. We need to follow the example of Jesus’s life and teaching and not be distracted by the false calling of the world.
