VERDUGO COMMUNITY CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE JUNE 2, 2024
Sunday Jun 02, 2024
Sunday Jun 02, 2024
We begin our service with song. Pastor Gail welcomes all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Luisa Fernandez calls us to worship with a reading from Psalms 65. Michael Blanco then opens us in prayer. Nick Baltazar and Ed Manacop lead us in our praise singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of the church and our world in the Prayers of the People.
Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Walking with Jesus – On Land and Water,” looks at Matthew 14 with the story of Jesus, and for a short time Peter, walking on the water. Jesus had just fed 5,000, and told his disciples to cross the Sea of Galilee without him. They obeyed, but encountered a life-threatening storm. Jesus then appears to them, walking on the water. Peter asks and is allowed to walk on the water toward Jesus, but sees the storm and begins to sink and has to be rescued by Jesus, who chides him for a lack of faith. When they get in the boat, the storm is stilled, and the disciples realize Jesus truly is the Son of God. We, too, are disciples of Jesus, like those in the story. Jesus asks us to step out in faith and promises that he will be with us and help us as we journey with him.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Living in the Unity of God,” celebrates Trinity Sunday by noting how difficult the concept of the Trinity is to comprehend yet how essential it is to understanding our faith in a Father God that sent his only Son to save the world, and, continues to work in and amongst us through the Holy Spirit. She reminds us of the repeated references to the different aspects of God throughout biblical history, from the creation to Jesus, the Word made flesh, and to the Spirit now available to all believers. We need to be sensitive to these references and how they can inspire us to love God more fully and go about spreading the good news with courage and hope.

Pastor Chris Dodridge in his sermon, “Unity In Diversity,” celebrates this Pentecost Sunday by reviewing Acts 2 to encourage us in our faith walk. He reminds us that the Holy Spirit came to all the believers in the first church when they were unified in prayer and fellowship, and they then testified to people from all the known world in their own languages, as Jesus had commanded. The Holy Spirit has never left us, and we should be aware of its leading and power in all of our life situations and with whoever God brings us in contact with, and go about spreading the good news with courage and hope.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Prayerfully Living Mary’s Song,” reminds us that Jesus in his prayers for his disciples in John 15 plainly warned that we would face opposition from the world, but had to fulfill his commandment to love others. On this Mother’s Day, we should remember the prayerful and inspired response by Mary to being told that she would become Jesus’ mother. In Luke 1 Mary accepts this role and praises God for his just actions and faithful remembrance of his people throughout the generations. Mary’s life after this was not always easy. She saw the growing opposition to his ministry that lead to his death, and then to his resurrection by God in fulfillment of his promises. We should remember that Mary’s faith in God emboldened her and was rewarded, and go about spreading the good news with courage and hope.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Bearing Kingdom Fruit While Abiding in Love” continues her exposition of Jesus’s Farewell Address in John 15, where Jesus tells his followers that to remain in him and bear fruit, we must love each other. Jesus chooses each of us to be in a loving relationship with him as a friend, and to expand that love to the others we encounter. God seeks each person through what John Wesley called “prevenient grace,” and God wants us to be the instruments through which is shown. Thus each act of kindness, compassion, and sacrifice we do for others as a result of this love shows that we are abiding in Jesus, and brings more people into the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth.

Pastor Gail in her sermon, “Bearing Kingdom Fruit,” looks at John 15, where Jesus uses the analogy of how a vine must be trimmed of dead branches if it is to be fruitful. He is the true vine, and we are his branches. As long as we remain in him we will be fruitful. To remain in him requires us to make the conscious choice to continue our faith walk, whatever trials may come our way. Jesus’ promise is that if we do so he will be there with us and give us a more abundant life.
